Release Notes

Changes between 1.17 and 1.18a (17 August 2016) :

  • All OSs:
    • Support Japanese encryption standard Camellia, including for Windows system encryption (MBR & EFI).
    • Support Russian encryption and hash standards Kuznyechik, Magma and Streebog, including for Windows EFI system encryption.
  • Windows:
    • Support EFI Windows system encryption (limitations: no hidden os, no boot custom message)
    • Fix TrueCrypt vulnerability allowing detection of hidden volumes presence (reported by Ivanov Aleksey Mikhailovich, alekc96 (at) mail dot ru)
    • Enhanced protection against dll hijacking attacks.
    • Fix boot issues on some machines by increasing required memory by 1 KiB
    • Add benchmarking of hash algorithms and PRF with PIM (including for pre-boot).
    • Move build system to Visual C++ 2010 for better stability.
    • Workaround for AES-NI support under Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2.
    • Correctly remove driver file veracrypt.sys during uninstall on Windows 64-bit.
    • Implement passing smart card PIN as command line argument (/tokenpin) when explicitly mounting a volume.
    • When no drive letter specified, choose A: or B: only when no other free drive letter is available.
    • Reduce CPU usage caused by the option to disable use of disconnected network drives.
    • Add new volume ID mechanism to be used to identify disks/partitions instead of their device name.
    • Add option to avoid PIM prompt in pre-boot authentication by storing PIM value unencrypted in MBR.
    • Add option and command line switch to hide waiting dialog when performing operations.
    • Add checkbox in "VeraCrypt Format" wizard GUI to skip Rescue Disk verification during system encryption procedure.
    • Allow files drag-n-drop when VeraCrypt is running as elevated process.
    • Minor GUI and translations fixes.
  • Linux:
    • Fix mount issue on Fedora 23.
    • Fix mount failure when compiling source code using gcc 5.x.
    • Adhere to XDG Desktop Specification by using XDGCONFIGHOME to determine location of configuration files.
  • MacOSX:
    • Solve compatibility issue with newer versions of OSXFuse.

Fix TrueCrypt vulnerability allowing detection of hidden volumes presence (reported by Ivanov Aleksey Mikhailovich, alekc96 (at) mail dot ru) Is this vulnerability really only possible on windows, or have you not been able to fix it on the other platforms yet?

This software has become my only encryption solution and meets all my needs. It completely replaces the TrueCrypt and incorporates great new features and now, new algorithms, PIM, bug fixes, more security etc. I'm so happy with the VeraCrypt that even made a small donation and i will make others whenever I can. Thank you very much Mounir! You are our hero.

Works very well. Setup is straight forward and easy to use. No issues with full disk encryption on Windows 10 Anniversary.

Veracrypt version 1.18 works perfectly on all my computers with zero problems (Windows 8.1 / Windows 7 on Broadwell and Skylake). Mounir, great job! You saved Truecrypt from extinction. Thank you very much! Do not be discouraged by unfair criticism. Go ahead! Veracrypt is already solid as a rock! Thank you again!

Finally UEFI VeraCrypt has come out. After so many years, now I have a viable open-source alternative.

Note that the "About" screen lists this version as 1.18, not 1.18a, in case there is any confusion about it.
by WastinMyFlavor on Aug 19, 2016 at 2:57 PM
The binaries in 1.18a are the same as 1.18. The only difference is that the driver is counter-signed by Microsoft to allow VeraCrypt to run properly on Windows 10 Anniversary Edition 1607. This explain why the About dialog show version 1.18.

Thanks for integrating the Microsoft-Signed VeraCrypt driver in the new v1.18a. Now it installs fine on Windows 10 Anniversary Update 1607. However, the UEFI in my Lenovo G50 blocked the pre-authentication/VeraCrypt Boot loader installation for the EFI encryption. So currently the Windows partition still cannot be encrypted. Do I have to turn off Secure Boot in order for the VeraCrypt boot loader to be installed? I used AES-Serpent-TwoFish algorithm.
by oliverjia on Aug 19, 2016 at 4:58 AM
EFI bootloader is not signed by Microsoft but by our own certificate. So, turning off Secure Boot will make it run but you can also keep Secure Boot on and load VeraCrypt EFI certificate into the motherboard firmware. Instructions on how to do so are detailed at https://veracrypt.codeplex.com/SourceControl/latest#src/Boot/EFI/Readme.txt. Many users successfully applied this procedure.

Well done. Veracrypt is my favourite encryption program.

Good further development of TrueCrypt and very useful. Unfortunately impossible to use on Windows-32-bit-UEFI-GPT systems that are out there a lot. When will UEFI/GPT come to 32-bit systems? (32 bit should be gone since years. I don't like them for a long time now. But they are still there - and now even on my table for reasons I would never have dreamed of...)

It´s not possible to use/test ver. 1.18 on Windwos 10 Anniversary. The driver has to be signed and does not load. I had to deinstall 1.18 and reinstall 1.17 to get furthermore access to my encrypted files.

Can you please download the installer again? I have updated it to include drivers signed by Microsoft. The installer now has version 1.18a. In 1.17 and 1.18, the driver is signed by a valid certificates: 1.17 signed by certificate issued on 2014 and 1.18 signed by a certificate issued in 2016 since the other one has expired. But Microsoft made it madatory to have drivers signed by itself in Windows 10 Anniversary Edition unless certificate was issued before 31 July 2015. This explains why 1.17 works but 1.18 not. Now, 1.18a should work.

Doesn't work on Windows 10 Anniversary, but I'm excited to try this when the update is corrected. :)

Can you please re-download the installer? I have included now drivers that are signed by Microsoft in order to avoid this error. The installer is named VeraCrypt Setup 1.18a.exe.
