VeraCrypt cease to respond

I have VeraCrypt installed on a MacBook Air running MacOS Sierra. When I have my file containers mounted & decrypted and have been working for some time on the files, VeraCrypt sometimes ceases to respond. I can then neither unmount the file containers, nor close VeraCrypt down except by using "force quit", and when I do that the files containers remain mounted & accessible. If I force a shut down of my laptop, the file containers are unmounted when I start up again, but it strikes me this is not a very safe way to proceed. I thought this might be cured by installing the latest stable version of VeraCrypt, but that has made no difference. Is there a known cause for this, and if so, how can I "fix" it?
