I understand that PIM can be selected and if left blank, it will use the default (485) PIM.

The question is: There is a checkbox for PIM during the creation of an object(File Containers/Volumes). If this checkbox is not selected during creation, does VeraCrypt still uses the default (485) PIM for mounting?

When you are not using a custom PIM, VeraCrypt uses a hard coded program values for the number of iterations of the hash.

So based from the information that you provided, if I use a pim 500 with sha 512 is not going be much different than NOT using a pim right since the iteration will default to 500000.

Thanks for the reply to both threads. Could you help answer some more questions in the other threads.

Based on the PIM documentation and a PIM value of 500 will result in 515000 iterations verses not using a custom PIM with program default for non-system volume will result in 500000 iterations.

Yes that is what I computed too.

Does 15000 iterations makes a huge difference?
