System Encryption of Windows XP installed on logical partition

I recently discovered that you can install Windows XP on a logiical partition, but I believe you need the XP boot loader files on a primary partition to get this to work, so I've been toying with the idea of trying this out. I was anticipating the set-up would be something like this:
C: sda1 10MB Windows bootloader files (primary partition)
D: sda5 10GB Windows XP system install (logical partition)
If I managed to install Windows in this way, could I then encrypt the system partition (drive D:)? Or would VeraCrypt just encrypt the boot partition (drive C:)?
