Self-mountable exe volumes ?

For small file-based volumes, it could be useful to obtain a .exe file (instead of .hc), so the volume can be mounted simply double-clicking it, without Veracrypt. Obviously it is only a nice-to-have functionality, Veracrypt remains the best choice also without it.

We have a pretty driver in VeraCrypt:-) The Self-Decrypting file should not only opened by mounting it. If you don't have administrator privilege, our driver will be in trouble. We can create a Self-Decrypting Archive will can just extract files from the volume or file container. This can be permanently and temporarily which means the plain file just exists shortly for editing and will be re-encrypted after the modification. The exe should securely delete the temporary.

PGP gave us a good example, that's user-friendly.

Hi Thomas717,
The idea comes from a SafeHouseExplorer functionality (http://www.safehousesoftware.com/SafeHouseExplorer.aspx).
There is no extraction phase: the auto-mountable exe volume opens a window with an associated drive letter, then it acts like Veracrypt (the encryption / decryption is on-the-fly).
Closing the safehouse window means closing the associated volume.

Great idea, I think we should collect all these ideas in a doc and send to contact@idrix.fr. However if we want to associated driver letter in Explorer, we need an Administrator privilege to install a driver. We can just detect if user has a Administrator privilege, we give them this enhancement. No matter the users has this privilege or not, a Explorer-like window like SafeHouseExplorer can be provided.
