Permanent Decryption

Topics: Feature Requests

I'd like to request the feature of permanent decryption for non-system partitions.

Here I have two screenshots of TrueCrypt 7.2 just in case you didn't understand me.

This one is showing the feature I'd like.

This other one is showing permanent decryption but only for system partitions.

There is already a feature request for this in the issues tracker: https://veracrypt.codeplex.com/workitem/35
Also, there is a discussion that talks about this: https://veracrypt.codeplex.com/discussions/575069

You'll find all the answers about this in the previous links. It will explain why it was possible to implement this in TrueCrypt 7.2 and the expected solutions in VeraCrypt.

I would prioritize this request rather low from a user perspective. The occurrence of these partially encrypted drives is in my understanding rather low in the real world (not when we are playing around); copying data back and forth is probably still faster than the decryption, which is by design a slow thing. As long as there are so many other topics with high priority on the list, like UEFI-boot and replacing the passphrase by keys for system-encryption, this request should wait.

I have included a first implementation of decryption of non system partitions/drives in the latest 1.11-BETA version for Windows that is available on the Nightly Builds folder on Sourceforge: https://sourceforge.net/projects/veracrypt/files/VeraCrypt%20Nightly%20Builds/

The decryption functionality is implement both as a specific menu under "Volumes" and when resuming interrupted process. This is helpful for example if the user starts encrypting a drive in place and then changes his mind before the operation is finished: he can just stop the encryption and then start decryption from where it stopped.

Thank you in advance for your tests/feedback.
